Illuminating Elegance: Unveiling the Art of Hamptons Landscape Lighting in Amagansett

Nestled between the serene shores of the Atlantic Ocean and the lush greenery of Long Island, Amagansett is a gem of the Hamptons known for its stunning natural beauty. I recently did a photoshoot with Vanessa Kordich, the senior lighting designer for Hamptons Landscape Lighting. Our goal was to highlight her stunning designs.

The Importance of Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting does more than just brighten a yard; it enhances the beauty of the landscape while ensuring safety and functionality. In areas like the Hamptons, where outdoor living is integral to lifestyle, well-planned lighting can extend the enjoyment of patios, gardens, and pools into the night.

Effective landscape lighting showcases architectural features, trees, and flowerbeds, allowing homeowners to appreciate their outdoor settings long after sunset. The art of landscape lighting revolves around the balance of light and shadow, showcasing each element harmoniously.

Photographing landscape lighting can be challenging because during the twilight hour the light changes fast, especially the further east you are from NYC. As a photographer you need to move quicky. You should arrive early, walk the property with the designer and set up your shots. This way you are not wasting time. The drone should go up first because the camera does not interpret light in dark conditions better than a still camera. You have more flexibility with the ground shots.

Techniques for Effective Lighting Design

Creating a well-lit outdoor space calls for a mix of techniques. Popular methods include:

  • Uplighting: This technique places lights at the base of trees or architectural elements to cast light upward, creating captivating silhouettes against the night sky.

  • Downlighting: Positioning lights above, such as in tree branches, mimics natural moonlight and provides a soft glow ideal for patios and walkways.

  • Path Lighting: Properly illuminating walkways and driveways improves safety and makes it easier for guests to navigate the property.

  • Highlighting Water Features: Pools, fountains, and ponds become magical when illuminated. Underwater lights can create stunning reflections, while accent lights enhance the surrounding stonework and landscaping.

In conclusion photographing landscape lighting is challenging but the results can be stunning if you are prepared.
